DESCRIPTION

Mark Levitan, the Director of Poverty Research at the New York City Center for Economic Opportunity, will speak about his work on redefining the poverty index. Researchers across the political spectrum agree that the current official measure of poverty provides little useful information about key issues such as who is poor or the extent to which public programs are successful in reducing poverty.

Since 2008, the New York City Center for Economic Opportunity – an organization within the Office of the Mayor – has issued a series of reports on poverty in New York.  Based on an alternative methodology first suggested by the National Academy of Sciences, this work has challenged accepted wisdom about poverty in the City.

Urban Mondays at Hunter (UMAH) is a lecture series curated by Hunter Urban Affairs and Planning and co-sponsored by the Graduate Urban Affairs and Planning Association (GUAPA), a student organization.
